"Financially foolish: Cutting funds for community health centers makes no sense" In the depths of the recession, a woman sought care at Squirrel Hill Health Center, a local nonprofit community health center. Highly educated, hard-working and independent, she was newly unemployed and uninsured for the first time ever.Working with our staff, she got a physical exam, a plan of care, needed medications and connections to support services. This patient is nameless because she is any and all of us: your neighbor with diabetes, your mother struggling to live independently into old age, your child's classmate in need of dental care and immunizations, the pregnant woman in line at the supermarket, the man with a cough seated next to you on the bus. The award, through HRSA's Facilities Investment Program, will be used to renovate a new site for a dental center. The center will provide general dentistry services in a four chair dental suite. SHHC expects the center to be open by the end of 2010 and to be able to provide oral health care to area residents who have difficulty finding dental services, particularly those without health insurance and with Medicaid. The notice came as part of President Obama's announcement that nearly $600 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) funding has been awarded to support major construction and renovation projects at 85 community health centers nationwide. Nationally, the awards are expected to stimulate jobs in the construction and healthcare sectors, as well as expand care to more than half a million additional patients in underserved communities. PITTSBURGH MAGAZINE and Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Project (PUMP) celebrate the eleventh annual "40 Under 40" with a special event at the August Wilson Center on November 6."40 Under 40" recognizes 40 talented individuals under the age of 40 who are making a positive impact on the region's development.Developed in 1999, "40 Under 40" helps highlight Pittsburgh and southwestern Pennsylvania as a place where young people can make a difference. "Each year it is exciting to read the nominations and realize the impact that the nominees have on our community." said Erin Molchany, executive director of PUMP. "Honoring young people for their personal and professional contributions to improving our region is something we at PUMP look forward to every year."Selected from a nomination pool of nearly 300 candidates, this year's honorees were chosen by an independent panel of twelve judges, comprised of former winners, business professionals and civic leaders. Winners were chosen based on their passion, commitment, visibility, diversity and overall impact on the region."The judges were challenged this year with scrutinizing a record-breaking number of nominations," said Betsy Benson, publisher of PITTSBURGH MAGAZINE. "The 40 people who rose to the top are community leaders noted for their intelligence, caring and drive." Please join us in congratulating Dr. Gilboa on this well-deserved recognition of all she has done for the local community!
