![]() ![]() | 2010 News "Health care reform reaches people in need through community health centers" To read the full article, please click here 2009 News The Squirrel Hill Health Center is receiving a stimulus grant of $792,700, The White House announced on December 9, 2009. The award, through HRSA's Facilities Investment Program,will be used to renovate a new site for a dental center. The center will provide general dentistry services in a four chair dental suite. SHHC expects the center to be open by the end of 2010 and to be able to provide oral health care to area residents who have difficulty finding dental services, particularly those without health insurance and with Medicaid. The notice came as part of President Obama's announcement that nearly $600 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) funding has been awarded to support major construction and renovation projects at 85 community health centers nationwide. Nationally, the awards are expected to stimulate jobs in the construction and healthcare sectors, as well as expand care to more than half a million additional patients in underserved communities. PITTSBURGH MAGAZINE and Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Project (PUMP) celebrate the eleventh annual "40 Under 40" with a special event at the August Wilson Center on November 6."40 Under 40" recognizes 40 talented individuals under the age of 40 who are making a positive impact on the region's development.Developed in 1999, "40 Under 40" helps highlight Pittsburgh and southwestern Pennsylvania as a place where young people can make a difference. "Each year it is exciting to read the nominations and realize the impact that the nominees have on our community." said Erin Molchany, executive director of PUMP. "Honoring young people for their personal and professional contributions to improving our region is something we at PUMP look forward to every year."Selected from a nomination pool of nearly 300 candidates, this year's honorees were chosen by an independent panel of twelve judges, comprised of former winners, business professionals and civic leaders. Winners were chosen based on their passion, commitment, visibility, diversity and overall impact on the region."The judges were challenged this year with scrutinizing a record-breaking number of nominations," said Betsy Benson, publisher of PITTSBURGH MAGAZINE. "The 40 people who rose to the top are community leaders noted for their intelligence, caring and drive." On Monday, June 29, 2009, Squirrel Hill Health Center received notice that its grant application was successfully approved for federal stimulus funding through the Capital Improvement Program. SHHC will receive $310,725, the majority of which will be used for the design and construction of the unit. The mobile unit will primarily be used to service individuals who face barriers accessing medical care, including the elderly, adults with mental illness, and immigrants and refugees. Since opening, SHHC has seen over 3,500 patients. The staff has grown to 18 members, with a clinical staff that includes four family practice doctors, an OB/GYN, a psychiatrist, a CRNP and an RN. 2008 Archives SHHC will host its first annual meeting on Monday, November 10, 2008 at 5:30 pm at the JAA Community Room located in the Charles Morris Nursing Home at 200 JHF Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15217. Dr. Andrea Fox, left, medical director of SHHC, and CEO Susan Friedberg Kalson, met U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt when he toured the health center on June 11, 2008. Leavitt was in Pittsburgh to announce that Pittsburgh has been selected to take part in a national Medicare study that will provide incentives to doctors that use electronic medical records systems. SHHC was honored by the secretary as a health center that is already using the electronic system.
